Chinese Silk Satin
Is it possible to purchase patterns for Chinese shoes for bound feet? I'm trying to make a couple for research?
I'm writing a research work on the custom of foot-binding in China, and although I found lots of books and pictures, I'd like a model for a couple stay with my paper and bought samples of Chinese silks, satins and silk embroidery thread
I could not find any pattern of beautiful shoes painfully disfigured feet, but I found two books that can help. Beverley Jackson "Splendid Slippers" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0898159571/102-3005938-1524962?v=glance&n=283155 (She has spent 25 years studying binding of feet and shoes. You may be able to contact her for a pattern, if not in the book, as she does it) "The author made a thorough investigation on the three-inch golden lilies, including the procedures of foot binding and how to make a lotus shoes." And Dorothy Ko's "Every Step a Lotus: Shoes for bound feet" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0520232844/102-3005938-1524962?v = view & n = 283,155 I found researching this, that the shoes were often embroidered by the women themselves, and also hired master craftsmen to raise the heels (with trails, etc.) and plants.
